The Last Ten Days of Ramadaan

The Last Ten Days of Ramadaan

Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin Al-Qaasim

Ramadaan 22, 1425  ~ November 5, 2004

All praise is due to Allaah Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared, for the fear of Allaah is the only way to guidance and turning from it leads to misery.

Dear brethren! Our Lord showers favour on His servants with seasons of blessings and righteous deeds. The pious ones seize the opportunity and those who love to return to their Lord in repentance endeavour to worship Allaah more in the blessed last nights of Ramadaan.

The nights of this blessed month are getting ready to depart. In this month, gates of Paradise are opened, gates of Hell are closed and the devils are fettered. The last ten days contain the best of all of nights. When it was the last ten days of this month, the Messenger of Allaah would keep awake for acts of worship during its nights. He would awaken his family and exert efforts in acts of worship. ‘Aaishah (Radiallahu Anha) said, “In Ramadaan, the Messenger of Allaah (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) would make efforts [in doing act of worship] more than he would do in other months. And he would make efforts during the last ten days more than he would do in other days of Ramadaan.” [Muslim]

In the last ten days, there is the mother of all nights, whose blessings are resplendent and whose moments are great. Few acts of worship performed in it are regarded as many and much acts of worship performed in it are multiplied.

The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months.” Many angels descend from the heaven to witness this month. Allaah says, “Therein descend the angels and the Rûh (Jibreel) by Allâh’s Permission with all Decrees” [Surah Al-Qadr: Ayah 4]

Ibn Katheer said, “Many angels descend during this night because of its many blessings.” The angels descend with blessings and mercy as they descend when the Qur’aan is being recited. They sit round the circles of remembrance and they sincerely lay their wings for the student of knowledge as a way of respect for him.

Dear brethren! It is in this month of Ramadaan that the Gloriuous Book of our Lord was revealed. The reward of the one who recites it is great. For every letter he reads he earns a reward of a good deed. The Qur’aan will intercede on behalf of the person who reads it. The reciter of the Qur’aan will be told on the Day of Resurrection, “Read and recite, for your place in Paradise will be at the last verse you recite.

So recite the Qur’aan frequently during the remaining ten days in order to attain the intercession of the Qur’aan and fasting. Angel Jibreel used to review the Qur’aan with the Prophet in the month of blessings and generosity.

Fellow Muslims! Prayer is the source of happiness for the righteous and a source of succour for the sincere worshippers. The best prayer after the obligatory ones is the prayers performed in the night. The Prophet (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) encouraged his companions to observe night prayers. He once told Ibn ‘Umar (Radiallahu Anhu), “How excellent a man is ‘Abdullaah if he observes the night prayers.” [Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim] And he never failed to observe night prayers after that.

One is blamed for abandonment of night prayers. The Messenger of Allaah (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam)  said, “Do not be like so and so. He used to pray in the night. But he has now abandoned the night prayers.” [Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]

Observing night prayers is one of the best acts of worship and one of the causes of admission to Paradise. The Prophet (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) said, “O people! Spread salaam among yourselves, give out food in charity and pray in the night while other people are asleep, you will enter the Paradise of your Lord with peace.” [At-Tirmidhee]

The one who observes the nights of Ramadaan in prayer is promised forgiveness. The Messenger of Allaah (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) said, “He who observes the night of Ramadaan in prayers with eemaan and a hope to get reward from Allaah, his past sins will be forgiven.” [Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]

On every night, there is an hour of acceptance of supplications. The doors of acceptance are opened and the Generous Lord gives generously. So ask Him for your needs and be sure that that your supplication will be accepted, for the Giver is Great. Complain to your Lord, for He is the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. Show Him your agony for He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. The Prophet (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) said, “There is an hour during the night, any Muslim who is made successful to meet this hour and he asks for the blessings of this world and the Hereafter, he will be given all that he asked for. And this hour is in every night.” [Muslim]

The breezes of the last hour of the night increase the chances of accepted supplications. The Prophet (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) was asked about the supplication that is most accepted and he said, “The supplication done in the middle of the night and at the end of obligatory prayers.” [At-Tirmidhee]

Man is in need of cleaning the filth of his sins. He needs to show helplessness before his Lord during these last ten days, through I’tikaaf in one of the houses of Allaah so that his sin may be forgiven and his supplications may be accepted.

The Messenger of Allaah (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) used to make I’tikaaf during that last the days of Ramadaan until he died. Therefore, seek the pleasure of your Lord through this act of worship. Always remember Allaah and make a lot of supplications during the hours of acceptance. Al-Qurtubee said, “The merit of a time depends on many virtuous acts that are performed there.

When a servant moves closer to his Lord Allaah shows benevolence to him and brings him good things from sources he could not imagine. Allaah protects him from all evils and elevates him to the highest degree.

Dear Muslims! Money is a trust in your hand. Your share of it is only that which you spend on your feeding, clothing and the charity you give. So humble yourself for the poor and spend in charity. Move close to the poor and show compassion to them. Do not ever disdain them for they are the majority of the inhabitants of Paradise.

You can save yourself from Hell with little charity you give. The Prophet (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Seek protection against Hell even with a half of a date.” Guard your soul against greed and be sure that the Generous Lord will enrich you and give you better replacement for what you have spent in his cause. The Messenger of Allaah said, “O man! Spend [in charity], it will be spent upon you.” [Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]

He (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) also said, “Charity diminishes nothing from the wealth.” [Muslim]

Satan tempts you and commands you to withhold from spending. He treacherously makes greed fair-seeming to you.  Allaah says: “Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahshâ (evil deeds, illegal sexual intercourse, sins); whereas Allaah promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty.” [Surah Al-Baqarah: Ayah 268]

Therefore, do not suppress any orphan nor shout at any beggar. Spend generously so that your wealth and children may be blessed.

O you who have believed! Bow down, and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord and do good that you may be successful.” [Surah Al-Hajj: Ayah  77]

Fellow Muslims! The month of Ramadaan is getting ready to go will all acts of worship performed in it. The wise is the one who concludes his month with a sincere repentance by keeping away from sins. The bankrupt is the one who plunges himself into sins and then meets his Lord as a disobedient servant.

Repentance is not a defect. It is rather one of the greatest perfect qualities and one of the most beloved acts of worship to Allaah. Make a lot of istighfaar at the end of this month it will be a crown upon your acts of righteousness and a remover of your faults and defects. Remember that Allaah stretches His Hand during the night so that those who have sinned during the day could repents and He stretches His Hand during the day so that those who have sinned during the night could repent. This will continue until the sun rises from the west. Beware of delaying repentance for death comes unexpectedly.
