First Khutbah

Praise be to Allah, Supporter of the believers. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, who has no partners, the Protector of the righteous, and I bear witness that our Prophet Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, the best of all creation. O Allah! Bestow Your peace, prayers, and blessings on him, his Household, and his Companions till the Day of Judgment.

O Muslims! Listen to the words of your Lord: “O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed achieved a great achievement.” [Surah al-Ahzab: 70-71].

Brothers in Islam! The misfortunes and evils surrounding Muslims today, as well as the trials, oppression and gross corruption besetting some Muslim countries, require all of us to join hands and support one another with a view to establishing truth and justice and repelling falsehood and oppression. Our Lord, Glorified and Exalted be He, says: “Help one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety). . .” [Surah al-Ma’idah: 2]

The believers constitute one body; each one of them supports the other. They are brothers in times of ease and in times of hardship. Allah, Exalted be He, says: “The believers, men and women, are Auliya’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another. . .” [Surah at-Tawbah: 71] He also says: “The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic religion). . .” [Surah al-Hujurat: 10]

Our Prophet ﷺ, the leader of the whole Muslim Nation, said, “A believer to a believer is like a building in which each block is cemented to the other.” He then clasped his hands with the fingers interlaced, implying the necessity to do so.

O Muslims! The Prophet’s ﷺ strict observance of this important rule is a reminder of the hadith that says, “In their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy, the believers are like one body. When one of the limbs aches, the whole body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever.” [Agreed upon]

Brothers in Islam! From the perspective of the Qur’an and Prophetic traditions, the relationship between Muslims is delineated in the Prophetic hadith that says, “A Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim; he should not wrong him or hand him over to whoever wrongs him. If anyone fulfils the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfil his needs; if anyone relieves the distress of a Muslim, Allah will relieve his distress on the Day of Resurrection; and if anyone covers the faults of a Muslim, Allah will cover his faults on the Day of Resurrection.” [Agreed upon]

According to these fundamental principles and solid foundations, which stem from the Qur’an and the Sunnah and which are based on true monotheism and obedience to Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, seeking to shed the blood of Muslims, sullying their honour, or unlawfully seizing their property are among the deadliest sins and most atrocious acts in Islam. Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, says in the Glorious Qur’an: “And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the Wrath and the Curse of Allah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him.” [Surah an-Nisaa’: 93].

O Muslim! Is there any clearer statement than this? Is there any stronger admonition? Why, then, do some people belittle the act of killing believers intentionally, which is a predicament from which there is no escape, as described by ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father?

It is narrated in an authentic hadith that the Prophet ﷺ said, “A Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim; he should not betray him, lie to him, or fail him. The whole of a Muslim is inviolable for another Muslim: his honour, his property, and his blood”. The Prophet r also said, “A believer will continue to guard his faith [and thus hope for Allah’s mercy] as long as he does not shed blood unlawfully” [Reported by al-Bukhari]

Brothers in Islam! As Muslims today have fallen into disgrace for the innocent blood that is being spilled in their midst, it is their responsibility and bounden duty to cooperate in order to deter injustice and support the oppressed. This is one of the fundamentals of the religion and pillars of Shari’ah (Islamic Law) that no Muslim can deny: “The believers, men and women, are Auliya’ of one another, they enjoin (on the people) goodness, and forbid (people) from evil. . .” [Surah at-Tawbah: 71]

Our Prophet ﷺ said, “If anyone of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest of faith” [Reported by Muslim]

O Muslim Nation! We have had enough of turning away from referring all our affairs to Islam. Do we not have light in our midst to illuminate our way? Do we not have divine guidance that will certainly guide us if we follow it? Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reminds us of things that are bound to improve our affairs, help us lead a happy life, keep evil at bay, and establish justice among us. He said: “Help your brother whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed”. A man asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should I help him if he is an oppressor?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “By preventing him from oppressing others. This is how to help him” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]

It is for this reason that the Qur’an and the Sunnah consider helping one another in injustice to be an odious sin and a heinous crime. Allah, Exalted be He, says: “. . . but do not help one another in sin and transgression.” [Surah al-Ma’idah: 2]

The ruling of the Qur’an and the Sunnah is that anyone who helps and supports an oppressor in his injustice has committed a grave sin and a heinous crime, as evidenced by what Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, says in this verse: “. . . but do not help one another in sin and transgression.” [Surah al-Ma’idah: 2]

The Prophet ﷺ also said in this respect, “There will be rulers after me who will lie and oppress their subjects. Whoever approves of their lies and supports them in their oppression does not belong to me and I do not belong to him, and will not drink from my Cistern [on the Day of Judgement]” [Reported by An-Nasa’i and classified by hadith scholars as saheeh].

So, fear Allah, O Muslims! Be watchful of Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, and keep the bonds of brotherhood in faith and love for the sake of Islam. Our Prophet ﷺ said, “None of you will be a true believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself” [Agreed upon] How, then, can anyone be a true Muslim while he is taking up arms against his fellow Muslims?

May Allah bless you and me with the Quran and make us benefit from its verses and clear guidance. I have said what you have heard, and I ask forgiveness of Allah for myself, for you, and for all Muslims, for any sin we have committed. Ask Allah for forgiveness, for He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.

Second Khutbah

I praise my Lord and thank Him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, Who has no partners, and I bear witness that our Prophet, Muhammad, is his servant and Messenger. May Allah’s peace, prayers, and blessings be upon him, his Household, and his Companions.

O Muslims! Muslims will not be saved from hardship or protected from evil unless their acts and practices are based on the principles of this religion, not on partisanship, whims and desires, sectarianism, or mere passionate zeal. The Muslim Nation will not be protected from dangers and tribulations unless its politicians and leaders act fully upon the teachings of Islam and unless its peoples and societies adhere to this religion and observe all its rulings, in minor and major matters.

The basis for security is to establish pure monotheism by worshiping Allah alone, Glorified and Exalted be He, and by keeping away from polytheism, innovations in the religion, and all means that are bound to lead to associating partners with Allah. Our Lord, Glorified and Exalted be He, says: “It is those who believe and confuse not their belief with dhulm  . . .” [Surah al-An’am: 82] that is, with evil, “. . .  for them [only] there is security and they are the guided.” [Surah al-An’am: 82]

The pillars and foundations for the safety and protection for this nation are not only achieved by mustering military power, but also by applying the rule of Islam in all affairs, whether major or minor, and being true to Allah at all times. It is for this reason that the Prophet ﷺ taught the Muslim Nation a fundamental rule that can guide the nation throughout its history, namely, the hadith that says, “Be watchful of Allah, and He will protect you. Be watchful of Allah, and you will find Him with you.”

It is the duty of Muslim rulers and scholars today to join hands and cooperate with one another to support the cause of Islam and safeguard Muslim interests. Individuals seeking knowledge should beware of issuing fatwas (legal opinions) concerning crucial matters that can affect the whole of the Muslim Nation without consulting all reliable scholars in accordance with the rules of sound scholarly practice and deeply considering the facts of reality, bearing in mind all consequences and possible outcomes. We must fear Allah regarding the Muslim youth. Ibn Al-Mubarak and other righteous predecessors never called out and addressed the Ummah except when one of them was in the front line facing the enemy.

O Muslims! The trials and tribulations are severe, and there is no way out but through sound understanding of the religion; for the best of us are those who have a proper understanding of this religion. The Prophet ﷺ said, “When Allah wills good for a person, He causes him to understand the religion.” Therefore, from the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we call upon the Muslim World League and similar organizations to hasten to summon the scholars of the Muslim Nation to discuss the current calamities in the light of the shari’ah texts and revelations, bearing in mind the basic rule that the main aim of the shari’ah is to bring about and increase benefits and to ward off and decrease the causes of corruption.

The state of turmoil and confusion in which fatwas are issued individually to the youth in the Ummah without the necessary understanding the rules of Ijtihad threatens to have grave consequences from which we ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, to save us.

O Muslims! Allah has commanded us to ask Him to invoke His peace and blessings upon the honourable Prophet. O Allah! Confer peace and blessings upon our master, prophet, and beloved leader, Muhammad, and be pleased with the Rightly-Guided Caliphs and Imams, Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, and ‘Ali, and all the Household and Companions of Your Prophet, along with all those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment.

O Muslims! I am making supplications to Allah, so ask Allah to answer our supplications by saying “Ameen” with attentive, submissive hearts, so that Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, may have mercy on us and on this Muslim Nation.

O Allah! O Ever-Living! O Self-Subsisting! O Allah! O Ever-Living! O Self-Subsisting! O Allah! O Ever-Living! O Self-Subsisting! O Owner of Majesty and Honour! O Mighty! O Wise! We seek support from You. O Allah! We seek support from You. O Allah! We seek support from You. O Allah! Grant victory to Muslims everywhere. O Allah! Grant victory to Muslims everywhere. O Allah! Grant victory to Muslims everywhere.

O Allah! O Reliever of all distress! Relieve the distress of our brothers in Syria, in Palestine, and everywhere. O Allah! O Ever-Living! O Self-Subsisting! O Reliever of suffering! O Reliever of suffering! Relieve our suffering and the suffering of all Muslims in Syria, in Palestine, and in any place in any Muslim country.

O Allah! Make good our affairs and the affairs of all Muslims. O Allah! Make good our affairs and the affairs of all Muslims. O Allah! O Ever-Living! O Self-Subsisting! O Great! We pray to you, we implore You to have mercy on our weakness and the weakness of all Muslims. O Allah! Have mercy on all weak Muslims in Syria. O Allah! Save their lives. O Allah! Save their lives. O Allah! Save their lives soon. O Allah! Save their lives soon. O Allah! Save their lives and protect their honour soon, O Owner of Majesty and Honour! O Mighty! O Wise! O Ever-Living! O Self-Subsisting! O You, Who are the only One who can grant victory to Muslims! O You, Who are the only One who can grant victory to Muslims!

O Allah, in Whose Hand is the sovereignty of everything! O You, Who protect all and against Whom there is no protector! Protect Muslims from the evil of these trials. O Allah, protect Muslims from the evil of these trials. O Allah, protect Muslims from the evil of these trials.

O Allah! Let all Muslims witness the month of Ramadan after attaining victory over their enemy, O Ever-Living! O Self-Subsisting!

O Allah,  forgive the sins of all Muslims, men and women, and of all believers, men and women, dead or alive.

Servants of Allah!  Remember Allah much; and praise and glorify Him morning and evening. The last of our call is “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.”
